Terugblik NARIM-congrescommissie: blijf elkaar opzoeken!

"Risico's verdwijnen niet. Maar hoe we ermee omgaan, verandert alles." Met die boodschap eindigde de afsluitende congresfilm van het NARIM Congres 2026. De film liet niet alleen zien hoe complex het speelveld van de hedendaagse risk- en insurance manager is, maar ook hoeveel energie ontstaat wanneer professionals samenkomen om kennis te delen en elkaar te inspireren. Toen de laatste beelden waren vervaagd, werd de congrescommissie onder luid applaus door dagvoorzitter Reinier van den Berg het podium op geroepen. Een welverdiend slot na maanden van voorbereiding. Maar hoe beleefden zij het congres zelf? We blikken terug met de congrescommissieleden - die tevens NARIM-bestuursleden zijn - Joost Knoppers, Brenda Soesman en Louise Berenschot.

Van een idee naar een jubileumcongres
Wie denkt dat een congres begint zodra de eerste spreker wordt vastgelegd, heeft het mis. Volgens Joost begint alles met een idee dat langzaam steeds meer vorm krijgt. "Je begint met een nogal abstract concept", vertelt hij. "Gedurende de maanden wordt dat steeds concreter. Uiteindelijk staat er een compleet congres. Als ik daarop terugkijk, vind ik dat misschien nog wel het mooiste."
Brenda herkent dat proces meteen. Al anderhalf jaar maakt zij met veel plezier deel uit van het bestuur en ook zij heeft zitting in de congrescommissie. "Ik vind het ontzettend leuk om kennissessies te organiseren. En een feestje voor ons dertigjarig bestaan combineren met interessante workshops? Dat was eigenlijk de perfecte combinatie."
Dat enthousiasme deelt Louise, die sinds het najaar van 2024 bestuurslid is. Juist het congres ziet zij als hét moment waarop de vereniging zichtbaar wordt. "Het congres brengt inhoud, ontmoeting en inspiratie samen. Het is bijzonder om de boodschap en de kernwaarden van NARIM te vertalen naar een evenement en vervolgens te zien hoe dat op zo'n dag echt tot leven komt."

Achter de schermen gebeurt meer dan je ziet
Een congres van deze omvang organiseren vraagt om veel voorbereiding. De commissie werkte daarbij nauw samen met evenementenbureau Daymakers. "Met elkaar vormden we een kleine commissie", vertelt Louise. "Dat werkte prettig en efficiënt, maar het organiseren van een congres naast je dagelijkse werkzaamheden vraagt natuurlijk veel tijd. De begeleiding van Daymakers was daarin ontzettend waardevol. Zij hielpen onze ideeën te vertalen naar een professioneel evenement." Brenda kijkt met veel plezier terug op die samenwerking. "Samen nadenken over het thema, sponsoren, workshops en de locatie ... dat is gewoon ontzettend leuk om te doen."
Volgens Joost kent zo'n traject pieken en dalen. "Vooral de laatste weken voor het congres zijn behoorlijk intensief. Dan moet alles samenkomen. Gelukkig hadden we een fijne samenwerking en hebben we nu ook al verbeterpunten verzameld voor volgend jaar."

Een congres dat energie geeft
Het thema ‘The Science of Risk’ bood volop ruimte om actuele ontwikkelingen als AI, klimaatverandering, cybersecurity en geopolitiek te bespreken. Maar hoe zorg je ervoor dat zo'n programma niet te zwaar wordt? Volgens Louise was dat misschien wel de grootste uitdaging. "Het zijn stuk voor stuk urgente onderwerpen. Onze uitdaging was om daar een congres van te maken dat niet alleen verdiepend was, maar ook energie gaf." En die balans, die is gevonden. Daar is Brenda van overtuigd. "Er was ruimte om nieuwe kennis op te doen, maar ook om te lachen. De sessie van Rob en Joep vond ik daar een prachtig voorbeeld van: humor met inhoud." Joost ziet daarin precies de kracht van het congres. "Het inhoudelijke programma is belangrijk, maar uiteindelijk draait het ook om ontmoeting. Mensen uit de hele branche samenbrengen is misschien wel net zo waardevol."

Gezonde spanning en veel vertrouwen
Na maanden van voorbereiden breekt dan op donderdag 21 mei uiteindelijk de eerste congresdag aan. "Ik had er vooral heel veel zin in", vertelt Brenda. "Natuurlijk is het altijd spannend of je niet te maken krijgt met onverwachte calamiteiten. Gelukkig zat zelfs het weer mee."
Louise omschrijft haar gevoel als een combinatie van gezonde spanning en enthousiasme. "Je hoopt natuurlijk dat alles goed verloopt en dat deelnemers een waardevolle dag beleven. Maar doordat we alles zo goed hadden voorbereid, overheerste vooral het vertrouwen."
Joost moet lachen wanneer hij terugdenkt aan die ochtend. "Grappig genoeg had ik vooraf meer spanning verwacht dan ik uiteindelijk voelde. Toen ik de Fokker Terminal binnenliep en zag hoe alles erbij stond, viel die spanning eigenlijk meteen weg."

De kracht van verbinding
Wanneer de drie terugkijken op het congres, valt één woord steeds opnieuw: verbinding. "Voor mij liet het congres opnieuw zien hoe waardevol NARIM is als platform", zegt Louise. "Het brengt verschillende perspectieven samen. Niet alleen tijdens de sessies, maar juist ook in de gesprekken tussendoor. Dat is wat mij betreft de echte kracht van de vereniging."
Brenda zag precies hetzelfde gebeuren. "Het waren geweldige dagen. Er was ruimte om te netwerken, nieuwe kennis op te doen, met elkaar te lachen én na te denken over onderwerpen als klimaat en cybersecurity." Joost vult aan dat juist die combinatie het congres zo sterk maakt. "Natuurlijk heeft iedereen zijn eigen favoriete sessies, maar uiteindelijk is het samenbrengen van leden, sponsoren en partners misschien wel het belangrijkste doel. Volgens mij werd dat enthousiasme breed gedeeld."

Reacties die blijven hangen
Dat gevoel werd na afloop bevestigd door de reacties van deelnemers. "Ik heb ontzettend veel leuke reacties gekregen", laat Brenda weten. "Mensen noemden het warm, goed georganiseerd en inhoudelijk sterk. Goede energie, relevante sprekers, een prettig tempo en uitstekende verzorging."
Louise hoorde iets vergelijkbaars terug. "Verschillende deelnemers vertelden dat het congres precies de beleving bood die we vooraf voor ogen hadden. We hebben stevige thema's behandeld, maar wel op een manier die toegankelijk en inspirerend bleef. Dat vond ik misschien wel het mooiste compliment." 

Trots en alvast vooruitkijken
Hoewel het congres nog maar net achter de rug is, kijken de drie alweer voorzichtig vooruit. "Ik ben trots op wat we samen hebben neergezet", start Brenda. "Samen met Joost en Louise hebben we een prachtig congres georganiseerd." Ook Joost kijkt met veel voldoening terug. "Ik vind het mooi dat ik mijn steentje heb mogen bijdragen aan dit jaarlijks terugkerende congres. En het mooie is dat we als congrescommissie nog een jaar doorgaan. De ervaringen van dit jaar nemen we meteen mee richting 2027."
Louise sluit af met een oproep aan de branche. "Blijf elkaar opzoeken. De wereld van risico's verandert snel en wordt steeds complexer. Juist daarom is het belangrijk om kennis, ervaringen en verschillende perspectieven te blijven delen. NARIM kan daarin een mooie verbindende rol blijven spelen."

Wanneer het gesprek ten einde loopt, komt de boodschap uit de afsluitende congresfilm opnieuw naar boven. Twee dagen lang draaide het om risico's, wetenschap en innovatie. Maar uiteindelijk bleek misschien wel de belangrijkste les dat geen enkele organisatie die uitdagingen alleen hoeft aan te gaan. Juist door kennis te delen, elkaar te ontmoeten en samen vooruit te kijken, ontstaat de veerkracht die de branche nodig heeft. Om met de woorden van Louise te eindigen: blijf elkaar opzoeken!

NARIM Congress Committee: "Keep reaching out to one another"

"Risks never disappear. But how we respond to them changes everything." That was the closing message of the final video at the NARIM Congress 2026. The film not only highlighted the increasing complexity of today's risk and insurance landscape, but also captured the energy that is created when professionals come together to share knowledge and inspire one another.
As the final images faded, the Congress Committee was invited by moderator Reinier van den Berg onto the stage to a well-deserved round of applause. It marked the culmination of months of preparation. But how did they experience the congress themselves? We look back with de Congress Committee – who are also NARIM Boardmembers – Joost Knoppers, Brenda Soesman and Louise Berenschot.

From an idea to a milestone congress
Anyone who thinks a congress begins once the first speaker has been confirmed is mistaken. According to Joost, everything starts with an idea that gradually takes shape. "It begins as a fairly abstract concept", he explains. "Over the following months it becomes more and more concrete until, eventually, it evolves into a complete congress. Looking back, that transformation is probably what I enjoyed most." Brenda immediately recognises that process. Having served on both the NARIM Board and the Congress Committee for the past year and a half, she has thoroughly enjoyed helping to organise the event. "I simply love organising knowledge sessions. Combining the celebration of NARIM's 30th anniversary with inspiring workshops was really the perfect combination." Louise, who joined the Board in the autumn of 2024, shares that enthusiasm. For her, the congress is the moment when the association truly comes to life. "The congress brings together content, networking and inspiration. It's incredibly rewarding to translate NARIM's mission and core values into a live event and then see them come to life on the day itself."

There's more happening behind the scenes than meets the eye
Organising a congress of this scale requires months of preparation. Throughout the process, the committee worked closely with event agency Daymakers. "We were a relatively small committee", Louise explains. "That made collaboration efficient, but organising a congress alongside your day-to-day responsibilities naturally requires a significant investment of time. Daymakers played a vital role in helping us turn our ideas into a professional event." Brenda looks back fondly on that collaboration. "Developing the theme, selecting sponsors and workshops, visiting the venue… it's simply a lot of fun to do together." According to Joost, every project has its busy periods. "The final few weeks before the congress are particularly intense because everything has to come together. Fortunately, we worked really well as a team, and we've already identified several improvements that we can implement for next year's edition."

A congress that leaves you energised
The theme, The Science of Risk, provided the perfect framework for discussing current developments such as artificial intelligence, climate change, cybersecurity and geopolitics. But how do you ensure that such a programme remains inspiring rather than overwhelming?
For Louise, finding that balance was perhaps the greatest challenge. "These are all urgent topics. Our goal was to create a congress that offered depth and insight while also leaving people feeling energised." And according to Brenda, that balance was achieved. "There was plenty of room to gain new knowledge, but also to laugh. The session by Rob and Joep was a perfect example of that: humour with substance."
Joost believes that combination reflects the true strength of the congress. "The content is important, of course, but ultimately it's also about bringing people together. Connecting professionals from across the industry is every bit as valuable."

Excitement mixed with confidence
After months of preparation, the first day of the congress finally arrived on Thursday, 21 May. "I was mostly looking forward to it", Brenda recalls. "There's always a bit of tension because you never know whether something unexpected might happen. Fortunately, even the weather was on our side." Louise describes her emotions as a mixture of excitement and confidence. "Of course you hope everything runs smoothly and that participants have a valuable experience. But because we had prepared so thoroughly, confidence quickly outweighed the nerves." Joost laughs as he remembers that morning. "Funny enough, I expected to feel much more nervous than I actually did. The moment I walked into the Fokker Terminal and saw everything in place, the tension simply disappeared."

The power of connection
Looking back, one word keeps returning throughout the conversation: connection. "For me, the congress once again demonstrated the value of NARIM as a platform", Louise says. "It brings together different perspectives—not only during the sessions, but also in all the conversations in between. That's what I believe is the real strength of our association." Brenda experienced exactly the same. "They were fantastic days. There was time to network, gain new knowledge, share a few laughs and reflect on important topics such as climate change and cybersecurity."
Joost believes it is precisely this combination that makes the congress so successful. "Everyone will have their own favourite sessions, of course, but bringing together members, sponsors and partners is perhaps the congress's greatest achievement. I think that sense of enthusiasm was shared by everyone."

Feedback that stays with you
That feeling was reinforced by the reactions they received afterwards. "I heard so many positive comments", Brenda says. "People described the congress as warm, well organised and highly relevant. They appreciated the atmosphere, the speakers, the pace of the programme and the overall organisation." Louise heard similar feedback. "Several participants told me the congress delivered exactly the experience we had hoped to create. We addressed challenging topics, but in a way that remained accessible, inspiring and optimistic. For me, that was perhaps the greatest compliment we could receive."

Looking back with pride and ahead to the future
Although the congress has only just concluded, all three committee members are already looking ahead. "I'm incredibly proud of what we've achieved together," Brenda says. "Joost, Louise and I organised a congress that we can all look back on with great satisfaction."
Joost shares that feeling: “I'm proud that I was able to contribute to this annual event. And the good news is that our Congress Committee will continue for another year, allowing us to build on everything we've learned as we start preparing for the 2027 edition."
Louise closes with a message to the industry: "Keep reaching out to one another. The world of risk is evolving rapidly and becoming increasingly complex. That is exactly why it is so important to continue sharing knowledge, experiences and different perspectives. NARIM can continue to play an important role in bringing people together."

As the conversation draws to a close, the message from the congress's final film comes to mind once again. For two days, the focus was on risk, science and innovation. Yet perhaps the most important lesson was that no organisation has to face these challenges alone.
